About Grey Owl

Grey Owl, real name Archibald Belaney was born in Hastings, England in 1888 and emigrated to Canada in 1906. Living in Temagmi, Northen Ontario, he adopted a native identity and the name Grey Owl. He worked as a fur trapper, a wilderness guide and forest ranger, telling people that he was the son of a Scottish father and an Apache mother.

Having served in world war one, Grey Owl went back to Canada where he married an Iroquois woman called Gertrude Banard whom he later called Anahareo. It was she who encouraged him to stop trapping and to publish the story of his life in the wilderness.

In his writings for books and magazines, Grey Owl promoted the idea of environmentalism. In 1935 and 1937 he toured England and in the audience of one of his appearances at London's Palladium theatre were two brothers; Richard and David Attenborough, both of whom were affected by the show. Richard Attenborough went on to make a film about Grey Owl starring Pierce Brosnon in 1999.
