The Cemetery
St. Sepulchre's Cemetery, Jericho, Oxford, England
The cemetrey opened around 1850 after the second cholera outbreak of 1849. By this time, the graveyards of Oxfordshire were overflowing and were themselves becoming a health hazard. The site selected was an abandoned farmstead - part of Walton Manor Farm which, together with Blackball Farm and Diamond Farm, gave the immediate area its name of 'Three Farms' in the 18th century (long before this time, Walton Manor was home to the Norman Roger d'Ivry as recorded in the Domesday book). The original gateposts of the farm still stand on Walton Street - the lodge was added in 1865 to the designs of E.G. Bruton.
